Site News and Updates

11 January 2009 (4th update):
Personal: After watching the videos demonstrating Windows 7 features in PDC last October, I was very impressed and wanted to try it out via the several leaked releases, but ended up waiting for the first public beta that launched 2 days ago. Also took the opportunity to swap my OS and data drives since I needed the extra space. Been up and running in Windows 7 since 2AM today and am extremely impressed by what I'm seeing so far. Considering it's only Beta 1 so far, stability is similar to Vista SP1 and performance and features is a significant jump from Vista. Microsoft does not have far to go to polish this beta to RTM standards.

11 January 2009 (3rd update):
Personal: Late last week, I decided to fulfil one of my longstanding computer wishes and got myself an illuminated keyboard. This urging was prompted by the arrival of the sleek Logitech Illuminated keyboard in Malaysia. However, the RRP at RM329 put me off about getting one. Decided to save nearly RM100 by getting the Saitek Eclipse II keyboard instead. The switchable light colours clinched the deal for me.

11 January 2009 (2nd update):
Personal: Last November, I decided to take advantage of rapidly dropping RAM prices to upgrade to 8GB of RAM for my computer. After purchasing it, less than a month later, prices dropped by another 40% compared to the amount I had paid!

11 January 2009:
Personal: Going back to the DVD writer issue last August, I exchanged the faulty Asus writer for a Lite-on writer and also tried out a Samsung writer since it was priced very well. Unfortunately, on my system, Vista refuses to start with 2 SATA writers and 2 hard drives in AHCI mode. Ended up selling the Lite-on to a friend and keeping the Samsung, since I rarely do disc-to-disc copying these days. I also got an external USB enclosure for the WD 250GB drive at the same time.

1 November 2008:
Personal: I expect to have a new toy to play with quite soon. :)

31 October 2008:
Personal: After more testing, it turns out that only one of my Lite-on DVD writers is really faulty, the other one is just slightly faulty. Interestingly, it’s the newer drive that is faulty and not the older one, as one would expect. The new Asus DVD writer doesn’t write DVD’s properly and I will be collecting a new drive this Monday from warranty, most likely a Lite-on 22X model. Will probably keep the semi-working Lite-on drive as spare.

28 October 2008:
Personal: Can't quite believe that both my Lite-on DVD writers will fail at nearly the same time. I decided to get an Asus DVD writer to replace it. Also as part of my drive retirement policy, I’ve decided to retire my oldest hard drive (WD200JB) after having used it for nearly 5 years with a WD 640GB drive. Usually, my next oldest drive will then become my boot drive and the newest drive my data drive, but this time I’ve decided to put my newest drive as my Windows drive as the WD 640GB is currently one of the fastest hard drives around. After spending nearly an entire day copying Windows from the old drive to the new drive, I finally found out more detail about drive lettering concepts in Windows and solved the issue with my user profile not loading correctly. I'm happy that Vista is now even more pleasant to use on the new drive, corresponding to a significant jump in WEI scores.

16 September 2008:
News: Fourty-five years ago on 16 September 1963, the nation of Malaysia was born. The new state was made up of the Federation of Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak, and Singapore. Two years later, Singapore left and a lot of water has passed under the bridge since then. Today, in a few more hours, Malaysians will wake up to a new dawn for the nation, concrete moves towards a federal government under the Pakatan Rakyat coalition. The change in federal government brings us hope that ethnicity will no longer be the main or only criteria in mind when all Malaysians look at each other. Hope that a clean, accountable, and transparent (CAT) government will be in place soon. Hope that all Malaysians will be able to equally enjoy the immense bounty that God has endowed upon the nation of Malaysia. Hope that calling ourselves as Malaysians will bring us a sense of pride rather than shame. I join millions of Malaysians in looking forward to the change in federal government as one of the first steps on the long journey ahead to realise our dream of a bright future for Malaysia.

29 August 2008:
News: The Permatang Pauh by-election that happened on 26 August 2008, is possibly one of the most important election to have ever occurred in Malaysia. While the political tsunami that swept the nation on 8 March 2008 was the harbinger of things to come, what happens in the next 3 weeks (21 days) after the 26th could herald the most important political change in this country, the first ever change of federal government after 51 years of independence. Like many of my fellow Malaysians, I look forward to this happening and wholeheartedly support Pakatan Rakyat and Anwar Ibrahim as the 6th Prime Minister of Malaysia.
